OCR: DIESEL ENGINE In the Diesel engine, where only air (no fuel) is drawn into the engine, much higher compression ratios can be used. The high temperature created during compression is sufficient to ignite the fuel when it is sprayed into the cylinder by a fuel injector. There is no "throttle" on a diesel engine; the engine always draws in a maximum charge of air during each intake stroke. The amount of power produced depends on the amount of fuel injected. Like the spark plug in the gas engine, the timing of the injection can be varied with engine speed and other conditions, and the rate and duration of fuel injection can be controlled, so that the peak pressures and temperatures during the power stroke do not exceed design limits.
